Student Protests

On 9 December 2010, the British Parliament voted on the much- discussed proposal of the tuition fees increase, while thousands of students protested outside at Parliament Square.

Despite of the Lib Dems position against any rise in tuition fees during the elections, 28 Lib Dem MPs voted in favour of the motion. With a majority of one vote, the motion was accepted and backed by the House of Lords.

This means tuition fees will rise to a maximum of £9,000 a year. Another motion was passed that the minimum fees should rise from the current £3,290 up to £6,000, from the academic year of 2012-2013 onwards.
